I'm going to disagree, mostly for fun.

Ogres, while terrifying and yes, fully capable of deciding to
friendly humans on an end-justifying-the-means basis, but they are
not wild, uncontrollable "chaotic-evil" beings.

Large zoo animals, and trained whales and dolphins for that matter,
are taught some behaviors specifically so that vets can tend to them
- old still and open your mouth, lift your foot and don't put it down
while we dig at your toenails, etc. The Ogre would absolutely be
programmed to hold still during maintenance, operate systems at the
behest of technicians, answer all questions regarding operational
status to those who need to know, etc, and this programming would
have to same force as the Kill-the-Enemy programming.

Not only would this be dead-easy, it would be just too useful to have
the Ogre moving its components, running test code, recalibrating
things on the fly, and for that matter keeping the darn maintenance
logs up to date.

In fact, you know how those formula one cars have built in jacks? The
pit crew hook up compressed air and the whole car immediately jumps
up a few inches so all four tires can be changed, and the time to
place the jacks is eliminated. I would expect that the Ogre would
have mechanical components specifically to aid maintenance, as well
as code.

Specifically, to maintain maximum armor integrity you don't want to
have a lot of screws, bolts, access panels, release levers, or what
have you on the outside of the Ogre. So how do you get in? I expect
that the Ogre can release latches and open things up from the inside,
similar to the way carrier planes fold their wings up.

So I don't buy the "unplug before servicing" notion. I think part of
the eeriness of working on Ogres would be the sense of operating on a
conscious, unanesthetized being who not only knows what you're doing,
he's an active partner and knows the drill far better than you.

Andrew
