Legendary toughness of katana: repeated folding of high-carbon and low-carbon

Legendary toughness of Chobham armor: layering of steel armor and ceramic.
Legendary toughness of "Biphase Carbide":
Alternating micron-scale layers of stretchy nanotube sheets (first carbon
phase) and hard nano rod diamonds (second carbon phase). Or, heck, specially
grown nanotube sheets that form a diamond mesh on one side.
You have to assume the whole "reactive armor" arms race is overshadowed by the
brute force battlefield nuke approach.
