Why not a properly-square mapsheet (that is, say, 8" x 8"), with a
hex-grid arranged such that an essentially infinite number of sheets
may be stuck together to form a battlefield? Aaron Allston tried this
with _Car Wars_ (among other such games)-related mapsheets (the
old _Autoventures_ line); a similar tack could be employed with
hex-maps.

Of course. As has been pointed out, _O_ shows off the Worst
Points of INF without showing any of the Best Points -- the INF are
on open terrain, without any sort of hiding places, so of course they
get creamed like corn.

Conversely, the map you describe (Pripet Marshes, maybe?) shows
off the Worst Points of *Armor* without showing any of the Best
Points -- the going underfoot is all-but-impossible, and the tracks
have no hiding places; meanwhile the footsloggers are in Hog
Heaven (in more ways than one, with all that mud).

If anything, the scenario you describe shows that the point system
for _O_ is hopelessly Boned; the terrain dictates the effectivness of
the unit, rather than any intrinsic nature of the unit itself.

None of the above. The question is whether or not the squads on
the GPCs can offload in the First-Movement phase, then reload in
the Second-Movement phase (can you say "HoverBlitz"?).

If they can, then grab as many as possible (Attack 7, Move 3); if not,
don't. (I play the latter style, myself, so for "Raid", I grab as many
LGEV as possible, and Fuzzy-Wuzzy the local terrain to death.)

INF are for holding terrain; put them in a non-clear hex, and see how
long it takes to remove the little bastards. GEVs are "shoot-&-scoot"
units; run 'em up to a target, mass the Attack points, then DMFP
before the Defender's tracks arrive.
