[Ogre] RE: Religion and OGREs

The idea of OGRE souls is an interesting one, and oddly enough there is
actually some credible work already done on the point.

In Catholicism, a case can be made for canon acceptance of OGRE souls.
It seems that Loren Wiseman asked his parish priest about the
possibility of aliens being Catholics. His priest asked the local dean,
who asked the bishop who referred the question to a cardinal who asked
Pope John Paul II (or so the story goes) who replied 'yes, anyone who
can think and understand the moral precepts of the Church can be a
Catholic'. While this isn't official canon, it suggests that if you
could convince the Roman Curia that OGREs can make moral choices then
yes, they would be eligible to become Catholics (though I suspect the
priesthood would be closed to them)

In Judaism, there is halacha (rabbinic rulings) on point as well. The
Golem was an intelligent machine but it had no soul, it was a creation
of man and not G-d. Man cannot imbue something with a soul, only G-d
can. Ergo an OGRE might be intelligent but under tradition Jewish
thought, it cannot have a soul and therefore cannot practice a religion
nor have any sort of afterlife. In the alternative, one could say that
an OGRE might become possessed by a Dibbuk (the restless dead), but I
don't think that would be the majority opinion.

In Islam, one could argue that an intelligent OGRE is nothing more than
a machine possessed by a Jinni. Jinn are spirits, some good and some
evil, which are neither allied with Allah nor Shaitan... sort of
supernatural free agents.

I am not familiar enough with Hinduism or Buddhism to guess at their
opinion.

Under Shinto or Daoist though, we already have the idea of rocks and
springs having spirits associated with them, so why not an OGRE?

As for an OGRE pope... doesn't seem likely but you could have Felix Mk V
(Felix IV was the last of that name), Sixtus Mk VI, Eugene Mk V, Martin
Mk VI, John Paul Mk III, Julius Mk IV, Marcellus Mk III or Nicholas Mk
VI. The next Benedict will would be Benedict XVII an OGREs don't come in
Mk XVIIs (!) =)

For that matter, having an Ogre breathing down my neck would be the
surest way to get me to convert to Catholism.

Except, of course, that a Pope who used to run the Vatican's doctrinal
enforcement arm is unlikely to accept a "mere machine" as a "true"
Catholic (_GO_ 15, sidebar "Religion and AI"). Tho' this may give
credence to the idea that the OGREs themselves rammed the idea
through....
