I want to thank everyone who commented on my scenario
The First Factory State, especially Dave Morse who got
my mental juices flowing.
Dave wrote:
"I don't quite understand why the factory has chosen
to rebel. It must be slightly insane, because even if
it wins decisively in this scenario, the Combine's
just going to cut off its flow of raw materials, and
then eventually send an overwhelming horde of guys to
suppress the rebellion."
I was thinking along the lines that the factory AI
isn't so much insane, but clueless. Its an old piece
of outdated software that was perfectly adequate at
the time it was created- perfectly adequate at
managing a production factilty and effeciently
building Ogre Mk Is and IIs, that is.
But when it comes to military strategy, diplomacy, and
negotiations with live human beings, it has the
finesse of a first grader. It doesn't have a clue
about the "real world" that exists beyond the walls of
the factory campus. To it, the various cities, states
and shipping addresses are simply names in its
database that it uses to gain access to more raw
materials for building more Mk I Ogres.
The factory AI is, however, sentient enough to know
that it doesn't want to have the plug pulled on it.
When it learns that it has been outphased and the
humans now cosider it obsolete, its artificial
"survival instincts" kick in- the desire for self
preservation by any means possible. It makes perfect
sense (to it) that if it murders its opposition- a few
human guards and technicians- it can continue
fulfilling the purpose of its existence... building MK
I Ogres. And then building more Mk I Ogres.
Anyway, that was my line of thinking. :-)
Thanks for the comments. Maybe I should add something
more to the flavor text.
More scenarios are coming soon. I'm glad people liked
this one, because its actually my least favorite of
the 4 scenarios I whipped up recently. Its still fun,
though. If anyone has actually PLAYED it, I'd love to
hear your comments regarding play balance.
A correction to the setup:
Setup works better if the Factory player first places
its base and howitzer. Then, the Combine player places
all of its forces. Lastly, the Factory player places
its three Ogres.
And here's a new variant:
2.43 Godzilla Variant. Combine player chooses any 300
non-stationary armor units, including as many LGEVs as
he or she wants. Factory player gets no ogres or
howitzers, but instead gets one (1) Godzilla. Setup is
as follows: Godzilla player picks up all of the
Combine players' miniatures or cardboard pieces and
hurls them against a wall, then stomps on them.
Scoring is as follows: decisive Godzilla victory.
