It means the square one the same file one rank closer to the promotion side
of the board (i.e., "immediately" in front of it).

I don't think it is really all that open to interpretation, unless you also
want to clarify whether it could include one of the squares diagonally in
front of it, or any of the squares on the other chessboard across the room
in front of it. :-)
