I believe that Jeremy is correct in essence, wrong in the details. Knightmare Chess is not a game of speed, and your worthy foe cannot say "My turn's over SPOILS OF WAR haa haaaa!" without giving you a chance to play a card in response to his move, if you so desire.
So yes, you had every right to play RIPOSTE.
Where I think Jeremy errs is in saying that SPOILS OF WAR can be permitted to take effect. The timing is against it. Opponent captures a piece. RIPOSTE goes into effect once that capture happens; SPOILS OF WAR doesn't go into effect until the turn is over. In this case, therefore, RIPOSTE gets priority and, because it removes the piece in question, SPOILS OF WAR doesn't even come into play.
Had I been adjudicating, I would have rules that you successfully played RIPOSTE, killing the capturing piece, and allowed your opponent to return SPOILS OF WAR to his hand.
