I would have loved to do the group denial version, but that only occurred to

Nah. You don't unmask using the card in your destroyed pile.
There are 7 (?) illuminaties in your deck, so you can unmask as the right 
one.
The point was simply that you don't have to be the same illuminati when you 
perform the eliminiation. The illuminated rival goes to your destroyed pile, 
so you can unmask to the same thing as him and then claim victory.
(I got this confirmed ages ago).
