Jean is the easiest Archangel to invoke, and famous as a micromanager. He expects to be invoked for quite minor problems. Why?
It’s important to remember that Jean has been called to replace Raphael – the Archangel of Knowledge. Yes, Jean is a technician: but he is also a scholar, a teacher, a trainer. His primary goal is to *train* his angels to the highest degree possible. As a teacher, he knows that early errors can cause huge problems later on: best to ensure that the foundations are rock solid. His angels can experiment, but only in controlled situations: an uncontrolled situation could result in them drawing false conclusions, interfering with their progress.
This approach is one reason he gets on so well with Laurence: both Archangels are determined to train their servants to perfection. It also a regular bone of contention with Blandine, Jordi and Michael: they would never smother their servants in this fashion. Michael is particularly blunt in his opposition to this micromanagement, feeling that Jean should let his angels have freer rein, and then clean up any mistakes later.
Jean ignores these objections.
After all, it is all very well for Michael to be confident that he can deal with future mistakes. Michael defeated Lucifer, and will have no difficulties dealing with Baal. Jean knows, oh so objectively, that he may die during the war. And given that he is filling the shows of a beloved fellow Elohite who *did* die, that statistically his odds of surviving the war are far worse than those of the other Archangels.
So he continues to teach and train, determined to ensure that his angels learn as much as possible: learn enough to carry on if Jean is destroyed.
Cheers, James.
