Rite: live in a city for one full day as an animal, without spending Essence.
Although most angels of Animals prefer to use the ‘spend eight hours with no trace of civilization in sight’ Rite, Relievers must earn each Rite in turn; at some point each must head to the Eternal City to live as a feral.
And cause trouble, especially when making nests. Nests of paper in Yves library, or decorated with gee-gaws filched in Commerce Park. Made by chewing through the walls (and wiring!) in the Halls of Progress.
This is Heaven, so every reliever (or Blessed animal) living in the Eternal City has an attuned Cherub of Animals assigned to prevent cases of flash-frying. Of course, the Cherub will happily put an axe through electrical cabling to save the attuned, so this creates more problems.
Although Jordi regards this as a simple territorial dispute, the other Archangels consider this useful training for the problems that will face their Servitors on the Corporeal. So the citizens of the Eternal City have to find other ways to discourage or live with these animals.
An additional complication is the determination of many Blessed to tame the animals. The many tricks and ploys used to acquire pets leaves most Jordians regarding humans the way other celestials regard Sorcerers – as power crazed lunatics.
>From Jordi’s perspective, this insight into the human psyche is valuable training. However, just as demons will play along with sorcerers, some relievers find that it is worth ignoring human delusions in return for sufficient petting. Judges keep a close eye on these relievers – encouraging falsehood in heaven is forbidden – but don’t intervene if the reliever is merely fitting into an existing situation.
The ban on spending essence isn’t accidental – Marc is very happy to have extra customers enter Commerce Park, and his Servitors are always offering deals. Knowing that a Blessed jackdaw has decorated its’ nest with items that it has *bought* irritates Jordi no end – and the assigned Cherub will have some explaining to do!
Cheers, James.
