Most angels and relievers never leave Heaven. It is in paradise that they serve – and use their Superior’s Rites. While many are straightforward, others will change Heaven is unexpected, but delightful ways. Have a new series.

Laurence: Celestial Killer

The Rite "Spend a whole night hunting your prey" is played as a game of ‘killer’ every 24 hours in Laurence’s Cathedral. The game is *huge* - angels of serving any Word are welcome to take part, as are humans. The rewards are also considerable: for outsiders, the Rite; for Laurencians, the Hunt Attunement. Laurencians who already have the Hunt Attunement run the game, and hunt players, adding complications to the game.

The game differs from its’ mortal equivalent in three ways.

Firstly, the game is layered; you are hunting players who are of roughly equivalent level to yourself. Of course, you can go up levels during the game – one of your targets is from the next level up. Players must jump at least two levels to be in the running for a Rite or Attunement.

Secondly, you cannot be knocked out of the game. If ‘killed’, you swap as many targets as desired by the ‘killer’ – to jump a level this must be all of them. One of them must be your self. 
Should you have no other targets remaining, you re-enter the game as a sidekick and lookout for your ‘killer’: hopefully learning skills from them! The referees watch sidekicks and their killers closely, looking for leadership potential.

Thirdly, the game is ‘sudden death’ – if you are observing a target at ‘dawn’, you jump a level; if it the target who would normally jump you a level, you gain *two* levels. Laurence constantly hammers home the need to bushwhack demons at dawn, when angels gain additional essence, and designed his Rite accordingly.

There are of course multiple winners of this game, one or more per level. Laurence uses this Rite to recruit both Saints and Relievers; winning a game of Killer is solid step towards earning a position within The Sword.
