Let's see, we have abuse of the law. This abuse by someone who knows the
law so well that even though the lawsuit is on the surface *completely*
bizarre, it can't be thrown regardless of how screwy it is. The case is
over a physical object that is on the surface not worth nearly that
much.

At least to me, this sounds like a failure on an attempt to remove an
attunement by a Djinn of the Game. Of course Nybbas decided to help to
salvage the situation. The only question is, which Djinn failed his
attempt to remove the attunement, was it Asmodeus himself?
