They never understand.

The Watchers. Our brothers and sisters. The ones that stay true to
their nature. Their nature, that caused us to be Cast Out of Heaven.
Which was no more than was fair. Our sins were such, that they had to
Cast us Out. Angels, Cast Out of Heaven.

But what of us Skulkers? Oh, yes, we're supposed to be *hiding*, you
understand. We're all of us, oh so *broken*, so different from those
bright angels that had to be exiled from perfection... that's why
nobody ever sees us, nobody ever knows where we go, nobody ever thinks
twice about where we ended up. It's as if we're dead.

Most of us are.

You have to cut yourself, you understand. It's the only way that they
won't see you, after you're dead. You cut yourself, and you give -
never mind who - the bits left over, so that they can make sure that
there's always more Skulkers; and then you die. And then you can
really /hide/.  There's one place that nobody ever looks for a demon;
no, not Heaven. Precisely the opposite, in fact. It is not only the
damned souls that are persuaded by the sight of the Two Angels letting
them pass unrescued; their tormentors are likewise convinced.

We are the demons that swim in a sea of damned souls. We face the
whip, the scourge, the torch, the bone saw, the glowing green
test-tube, every half-clever torture created by half-clever demons to
torment their betters... we face it with them, but we are not of them.
God taught us that, in proper Old Testament style. And he was
*right* to do that. We made *mistakes*. We were *proud*. And so we
take our proper punishment, in ignominity.

And we also wait. "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the
angels in Heaven" - and certainly neither do demons in Hell. But that
day and hour *will* come, and when it does, we will be the ones
opening the gates for the avenging armies of the Lord.

What?

Why do you blink at this? If God can create a Choir Fated for error,
can He not create a Band that is Destined to repentance?
