There are few things as disturbing for a Gamester as
having a Conspirator confess to a crime. It's even
worse when they frankly confess that they're getting
dissonance for being so open about their treachery.
Then the Asmodean just *knows* that the Alaemish has
hit him with the 'Seal of the Confessional'
attunement, and that he'll never get a chance to
reveal the secrets that were shared with him.
Fortunately for the Hounds, it takes a lot of
preparation to ensure that a Gamester will fail all
three Will rolls, so this is uncommon. More commonly,
an Aleamite will suggest that the Asmodean can delay
putting in reports on him, and blame the attunement
for the delay.
And even more commonly what Conspirator? It's a rare
Coward who will stay in the open to be investigated!
Just *finding* an Alaemite to investigate is hard
enough; and their skill at remaining hidden makes
going Renegade a simple matter. Mind you, going
Renegade means leading a paranoid, suspicious,
secretive life so the only difference to serving
Secrets is a greater likelihood of being executed.
Fortunately, Secrets *likes* The Game, so Conspirators
often seek out the nearest Gamesters. No fools, they
rarely reveal themselves, preferring to use drop
points or other cutouts to pass on information.
Unless they wish to remain as cats' paws, blindly
eliminating the Conspirator's enemies, Asmodeans must
learn to dictate the flow of information. If content
to accept bribes, the Gamester must control who they
receive dirt on. If they want more serious
information, then offering to trade secrets of their
own (and the Hounds collect secrets about everybody)
is the obvious option; or perhaps the Coward would
appreciate spending some time as a human, courtesy of
Rule of Law?
The short term goal of the Asmodean is a strong
working relationship with the Conspirator this leads
to the mid term goal of tracking down where they are,
and what they are doing. Then, when an arrest can be
made, and evidence brought, the Hound can ask the
questions Asmodeus desperately wants answers to.
Where is Gebbeleth? Has Aleamon taken control of his
Tethers? What are the Grigori up to? What about the
Skulkers?
Of course, if the Coward was unskilled enough to be
trapped, he probably doesn't have the answers. And
since he's no longer secret, Aleamon considers him
worthless, so he's useless except for meeting quota
on 'Renegades executed'. So The Game continues,
spending more centuries seeking the answer to these
questions.
And Litheroy smiles, and waits...
