Though they could also be ancient ethereal entities who managed to get
Lovecraft to write about them, with some well-placed dreams or
whisperings! Or ones who were "close enough" that they grabbed for the
gold ring.
Or Beleth's demons set up the whole thing somehow and... rather lost
control of it. Oops?
If you run with the IN mythos -- and system -- dominant, you might want
to check out the Ethereal Player's Guide. It's very handy at making
ethereals more "miffic" than just cut-rate, no-Choir/no-Band spirits.
