I present some ideas I had for attunements for
Israfel. Hopefully others on the list will find them
interesting or helpful. I tried to keep theme
thematically consistent; it would certainly be
ridiculous to give servants of the Angel of Music
Attunements such that they became notorious combat
monsters, for instance. Anyway, here they are:
***Israfel - Angel of Music***
**Servitor Attunements**
*Musician's Ear*
Servitors of the Angel of Music are uniquely
aware of the harmonies - and the disharmonies -
of the Symphony. Square the Angel's Celestial
Forces when determining the base range at which
she can detect disturbances to the Symphony.
*Magister Cantorum*
Whenever an Servitor of Music hears a song
performed (even if by detecting the Disturbance
generated by performing the Song - but not by
anything else), he knows unerringly which Song
(and Version), the degree of skill of the
performer, and if there were any modifiers or
changes in effect in the performance (e.g.: if
the performer took extra time, used Sotto Voce,
performed with a Chorus, or had a bonus -
although this Attunement will only reveal if the
performer had a bonus and how much, but not exactly
why).
*Musica Universalis*
Israfel's devoted understand the Symphony well
enough to glean information from careful
listening even when there are no Disturbances at
present. With a few minutes careful attention to
the music of the spheres, and a Perception check,
the angel can discern what, if any, Word would be
most likely to hold sway over the area in
question. Generally, only high-level Words are
considered, and the Word in question is not
always obvious as it may seem at first blush. An
office rife with internecine rivalry might be
more appropriately under Faction than Trade, and
an adult movie set might be - depending on the
motivations of the individuals involved - more
appropriately under Trade than Lust! In essence,
this power gives the angel the 'zeitgeist' of the
area (or, more appropriately, 'platzgeist'). On
a Check Digit of 6 or more, he also learns if any
servitors of that Word have in fact had some
influence (such an Influence must have produced
some Disturbance, or else it will go undetected)
here in the past, but since this is not
restricted by time, it may be useless on certain
"areas." The definition of an "area" is fluid,
and the same physical locale can yield different
results depending on the 'character' of the place
- an empty office building is a far different
place from the functioning office that could have
been found there the day before, and from the
hideout for a band of thieves that will be found
there one week hence. It is said that wider
applications of "area" are possible - an angel
who spent months moving about a city, listening
to the strains of the Symphony, might be able to
get a 'read' on the whole metropolitan area! No
doubt, however, such a Perception check would be
at massive penalties, and the task would require
supreme dedication, as well as a willingness not
to generate any disturbances to the Symphony
one's self (so as not to interfere with the
delicate chords one is listening for).
"It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." Robert F. Kennedy
"A final victory is an accumulation of many short-term encounters. To lightly dismiss a success because it does not usher in a complete order of justice is to fail to comprehend the process of achieving full victory." Martin Luther King Jr.
