  Except that it isn't true that humans lack instincts. 
Most of what we think of as physical attractiveness is an
instinctive response to visual indicators of health,
fertility and social dominance.  We instinctively fear fire
and heights (work with infants has proved the latter, at
least), though individuals vary considerably in degree. 
And a lot of body language is universal -- crossed arms
mean the same thing everywhere, as do flirtation signals
like the eyebrow flash.  Humans have instincts just as
animals do and are just as prone to follow them.  The
difference is, we have the capacity for self-analysis and
the ability to override our instinctive responses.  Neither
of which, IMO, makes us more or less able to influence the Symphony.
