Hi all.
Of course, I know that this is ultimately my call as
GM, but I wanted to get the "take" on it from the
list.
The Balseraph of Andrealphas Band Attunement allows
the demon to force a target to enjoy a physical
sensation he's "inflicting" on the target. Now, of
course, the phrasing indicates that the Attunement was
written with the idea of forcing a victim to enjoy
something painful in mind, but there is no reason in
princple it couldn't be used for something else,
something not inherently *un*enjoyable.
The real question here is how "tight" a reading I
should put on the Attunement. To wit:
*Must the demon be inflicting the sensation on the
subject, such as by, say, tickling him, or can the
demon use the Attunement with regards to something
that the subject is merely currently experiencing,
such as being tickled? Even if we insist that the
demon must be "inflicting" the sensation, can he
"inflict" by being *reponsible for* the subject
feeling the sensation, such as by being the one who
orchestrated the situation, as by having others hold
the subject down and tickle him?
*What qualifies as a sensation? Presumably it would
be more general than just "pain" - perhaps "being
spanked" or "being whipped" would be more likely
candidates. How about sensations that are not
entirely somatic - such as "being naked in front of
strangers"? The latter seem to qualify more as
"experiences" than "sensations" simpliciter, but I'm
not sure it's unreasonable to allow them as eligible
targets for the power. Then again, if the answer to
the previous question is that the demon must be
strictly inflicting the "sensation" that would appear
to rule out "experiences," as one cannot "inflict" an
experience. Arrange for it, as by stripping someone
naked, yes; but even then, the demon is not actually
*causing* the experience of "being naked in public,"
at least not in the same way we would understand that
someone can cause, say, pain or the sensation of being
tickled.
Just wanted to see what the list thought.
