Actually, for the most part, SS /were/ supposed to kill swiftly and cleanly 
(unless there were "special reasons" involved). Concentration camp guards 
were punished for killing prisoners wantonly and reprimanded for showing too 
much enthusiasm for the act. They were supposed to be impersonal killing 
machines, doing their duty for the Fatherland. On the rare occasion that a 
guard refused to kill a prisoner slated for death, he would be reassigned --  
usually to active combat, as Franz was.

The Gestapo and its military "ideals" was a perfect example of Dark 
Selflessness, IMO.
