I've always viewed it as Destiny and Fate being absolutely
incomprehensible, and the described act is just the outermost touch of
something we've got no hope of really understanding.
In this, the theory is that, no matter how the Destiny or Fate are
defined as working out, in context they'll give you a really good view
of the decisions that brought the soul to that point, so that
Destiny/Fate pairs of "murder 57 people at just the right time"/"save
a kitten for the wrong reasons" only come into perspective at the last
possible moment.
