It's ironic, rather than a contradiction. Someone is only entitled to
the reward if they don't seek it; seeking it means they're not entitled
to it. I don't see any contradiction there; it would only be a
contradiction if performing the selfless act prevented you from being
rewarded for being selfless.
(As an analogy, imagine a competition for the "Humblest Person of the
Year" - anyone who thought they might qualify would be automatically
disqualified :-)
