I believe this came from reading Brin's "Heaven Reach" before bed...
The quote goes something like "I'd pray, if creation wasn't already 
moaning in pain"...

In this timeline, Gabriel is still sane. She caught Belial a century or so 
after the Gates of Hell were opened and reduced him to component forces. 
She still gave the Koran, but Dominic eventually ruled her innocent. She 
continues to inspire...

However Lucifer has raised Auctus, Demon of Cancer and Habbalite of
Technology (formerly of Disease) to Princehood, and set him against Eli.

Auctus promotes both unrestrained growth and the sameness of the new 
growth.

Allied with Vapula, and associated with Nybbas, he has driven Eli over the 
edge. Eli's servitor's attunements are now devoted to destroying the 
Cancer which Auctus spreads...


I haven't worked out all of the pieces yet, but I'll continue if there is 
interest...
