She has got involved in a (female patrician) friend's problems. Perhaps
(using your example) friend has had an affair and needed to borrow money
to pay a blackmailer, but friend hasn't been able to return it and now
wife needs the money back or will get in trouble with husband - so it's
time to go and beat up the blackmailer.
