Do you know Heavy Time and Hellburner by C.J. Cherryh? The 
main characters grew up in the outer system and moved into
the inner system, closer to Earth, and then debated if 
real egg was more icky than the fake stuff, and if there 
was a moral difference between eating fish and mammals.
