In a "blow stuff up" sense, yes.  In a "how can I take down this
building without knocking over the neighbors" sense, not so much.  And
even when you're using regular explosives, it's nice to know how
they're going to go off.  People doing explosives for mining and
tunneling did pretty sophisticated stuff by simply varying the depths
of holes that charges were tamped into, and by varying the delay
between their firing.

cheap, safe, and reliable are what you want.  If an explosion isn't
cheap, safe and reliable, something that is (relatively) cheaper and
safer and more reliable will be used.
