Main Entry: intellectual property
Function: noun
Date: 1845
: property (as an idea, invention, or process) that derives from the
work of the mind or intellect ; also : an application, right, or
registration relating to this
Laws regarding intellectual property may be an invention of the state,
but the idea behind IP is not.
Example:
I paint a scene that is wholely a work of my imagination (IE something
that doesn't occur naturally, the only source of inspiration would be
my painting). I refuse to allow anyone else to paint a copy of it.
Someone does, I beat them up. The state is not enforcing this, I am.
I am not using force to dicate the market price but whether or not
copies can be made of the IP. I set a price for my painting and
anyone who wants to pay that price can acquire the item. Anyone not
willing to pay my price may paint their own painting, or purchase one
from someone who didn't copy my work.
