Do we know the portal is one way, or only the amulet? Even if the portal
is one-way, there seems to be an enchantment that allows viewing the
destination, so the amulet could be some sort of magical laser pointer
that would be necessary to cover the fact that the minions can't see
their master after the go through the portal. It doesn't explain why the
delvers can see him, though.
Also, since the portal seems to be elsewhere on the same plane,
maintained spells will still reach even if the distance penalty for
casting them is -3520. This is a tremendous disadvantage for the
defenders, who might disastrously crit fail attempting to cast most
spells on the lich, and at best be ineffective. They'd have to use
spells that take long distance or other modifiers instead of -1 per hex.
