Spite? No. In this edition, the rules are there for the crunchy
stuff - and the emphasis there is on the battles. I don't agree
anyone's SOL if they don't have a guru in the group; People are going
to make up their own stories and tell them over the table rather more
free-form than in the past.
Do we really need rules to tell us how the conversation with the store
manager plays out? There are ways that can be useful, and games that
do that. But for those who want to play out the social stuff
verbally, tell an exciting story together, and then get crunchy when
the fightin' gets good...
Well D&D 4e's a solid option for that.
