You can't Delay or Link Missile spells, only Regular or Area spells.

If I were GM, I'd say that "in the area around this lump of clay" would be 
legit.

For this application, I'd Rive the hull, followed by a Create Fire (or 
Essential Fire)

Re-reading the 4e description of Rive, it apparently has no limit on amount 
of damage!  It says "1 per die of damage to be inflicted to the object"
