I have a halfway readable PDF from my current XML. 

* The contents page shows how metadata can be used to order the 
  vehicles. Searches would work similarly.
* Tables are still a problem. Seems fop doesn't do 'auto' yet.
  Does anybody know a better free formatter?
* Weaponry may be a question. Lite puts them into separate tables
  for design stats and firing stats. That can be done by xml/xslt,
  too, but is it a smart idea for a vehicles collection, rather 
  than a design book?
