I'm not Onno, but my view was that the characters were hackneyed,
cliched, and caricatures of exceedingly bad WW2 propaganda movies. All
in all, I thought it was the worst book I've read in years (up to that
point) and it soured me to anything with Ringo's name on the cover. I
really don't care what the author's motivations or reasons were for
writing it that way. If you want to make a point, write an editorial and
get it published. I spent $8.00 on dreck that was barely readable
because every couple pages (or more often depending on the event) I'd
stop, shake my head, and ask, "WTF is this guy's point?"
