I was about to write from memory, but looked for some confirmation from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoe_size and found:

wp> United States and Canada

wp>  male shoe size = 3 × last length in inches − 24
wp>  female shoe size (common) = 3 × last length in inches − 22.5
wp>  female shoe size (FIA) = 3 × last length in inches − 23
wp>  child shoe size = 3 × last length in inches − 11.67

so your 10½ is a 79⁄6 inch last (a last is the foot-shaped template over
which the shoe is manufactured) or 13 1⁄6 inch.

Medium width is somewhere between three and four inches for a size 10,
so figure somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 to 50 in² per foot.
