The
volume of a man of any set height varies extensively. I know 5'8" tall
men who weigh about 110 lbs, and 5'8" tall men who weigh 250+ lbs.
However,
I can offer that an old Dragon magazine article on calculating the
scale-weight of a golem or giant of any size says that humans, on
average, weigh 47 lbs per cubic foot. This is pretty close with GURPS
Vehicles, GURPS Robots, and GURPS Mecha's guideline of 50 lbs per cubic
foot. Go with 50lb/cu.fo., because it's not exactly precise (varies
with muscle tone to fat content, frex) so you might as well have a tidy
number.
"Joe GURPS", who is 5'9", weighs 150 lbs and therefore
is 3 cubic feet of human. He's the standard proportions used in
Vehicles and Car-Wars. Is your golem built like Joe Gurps? Or is he
built like a weightlifter (more common in art) or like an ectomorphic
scarecrow (shows up in some forms of art)?
Grab a dude who looks
basically like your golem, stick him on a bathroom scale, divide his
weight by 50 lbs/cu.fo. to get his approximate volume in cubic feet.
FWIW,
the Dragon magazine article from lo those many moons ago ("How heavy is
your Giant" by Schlump Da Orc, I kid you not) suggests that a 5'9"
"average" guy who would weigh about 167 lbs (I guess more athletic than
Joe GURPS), if made from wet clay would weigh around 355 lbs, and if
made from Iron would weigh 1740 lbs.
