Perhaps Dye has a duration because it is convenient that it is not 
permanent?

But I would agree that usually Dye should be permanent. In addition 
there should be a spell that reverts Dye (that is different than casting 
Dye again with the old colour: what is the old colour of - let's say - a 
scottisch kilt?)
