Why does Dye have a duration?   It would seem to me that it should work by 
changing the color of at least a thin surface layer of the subject.  Granted 
it might vanish if that layer were to wear off, but the spell should be 
Instant.

Changing the non-living surface layer of living being should go away as the 
skin or hair is shed, but that's not a true duration.
