[gurps] 4th edition and ebooks?

To be a little more clear, on the legal side of things, if I buy, say,
Basic Set: Characters, then scan or download the books to make a PDF for
backup just for personal use, this is still illegal? It seems kinda
silly to ask the question, but it is of use to me, because hauling
around a laptop is a lot easier than hauling around my entire GURPS
collection when I'm heading to cons and the like.
It seems somewhat analogous to ripping a CD for using on my own MP3 player?
Anyhow, the legal part was just idle curiosity, I am more interested in
how it plays.

Copyright law is not about money, it's about the right to copy. You may be confusing trademark, which is a different issue and might apply to the GURPS logo, but not to the text of the book.
