This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. My site is down for rebuilding, but sooner or
later the old stuff should reappear at omeyer.gmxhome.de

Gashidda-class 400-ton Surface Defense Boat v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL5)

During the Long Night, the planet Sonthert lost most technology. Some
historical knowledge was retained, so a ship that might be called river
monitor on other worlds is a SDB -- a Surface Defense Boat ...
The Gashidda-class 400-ton SDB was designed to penetrate the armor of
Imperial grav tanks and to resist their plasma guns. She falls short on
both counts, but she can resist the fire from the current Imperial grav
APC and damage one if she can bring her cannon to bear.
The SDB has a sloped hull and turret to maximize armor effects, and a
single 600mm breech-loading cannon. She fires 2-ton explosive shells or
4-ton solid rounds, propelled by some 3 tons of powder. The funnels of
the twin steam engines restrict the turret rotation to 330° unless the
cannon is raised for anti-air fire. Her hull contains quarters and coal
for two days. Usually the crew would live in barracks ashore.
At travel speed, the engines burn 125 cf of coal per hour. A full load
of coal, provisions and ammunition is $97,500.
Subassemblies: Body +9, full-rotation Turret +7.
Powertrain: Two 1,200-kW screw propellers; two 1,250-kW triple-expansion
steam engines; 80,000-kWs lead-acid battery.
Fuel: 6,000-cf coal bunker.
Occ: 60 RCS, 50 bunks, 4 double-occupancy cabins, 2 luxury cabins.
Cargo: 1,600 cf.

Design Notes
Body is 180,000 cf with mediocre lines, 60° F and 30° R/L/B slope, and
heavy compartmentalization. Turret is 20,000 cf with 60° F and 30° R/L
slope, and heavy compartmentalization. Structure is extra-heavy and
expensive. Armor is expensive metal. Waterproofed. Mechanical controls.
33,244 cf of empty space in body and 131 cf of empty space in turret.
10 rounds of 600mm solid and 10 rounds of 600mm SAPLE are stored in the
turret. Empty weight is 9,000,000 lbs.

The vehicle uses the design rules from Vehicles [second edition, third
printing, Dec 2004 errata], VXi and VXii (armor volume) with the text
format from Vehicles Lite. The Traveller background affects the design
decisions, not the technology.
Next Week: A primitive wheeled tank.
