Keeping with current practices, more like have a ship that
processes things, but it is controlled by imperial
contract/control. The ship builds things with a limited life
span, aka designed obsolecence. So they planet bound have to buy
it again or not have things, such as new video/music players, or
even medical devices?

Control of flow of tech, knowledge of how tech works, and supply
of raw materials, and designed break down, or how come almost
every Playmouth mini-van seems to have a tranny needing
replacement at the same time?
