This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. My site is down for rebuilding, but sooner or
later the old stuff should reappear at omeyer.gmxhome.de

Multirole Submarine v1.0 (TL9)
Copyright 2008 by Onno Meyer
The Multirole Submarine was written for games in the not too distant
future, when humanity starts to exploit the ocean depths as completely
as it used the surface of Earth in the 20th century.
Possible missions include research, support for isolated ocean-floor
settlements, or combat and law enforcement. The laboratory section can
be reconfigured, from oceanography to underwater archeology.
The Multirole Sub should stay in deep water, so the dry dock usually
contains at least one submarine shuttle in addition to little research
and repair DSVs. For patrol or combat missions, fighter subs could be
carried instead. The cargo capacity is limited, 50 tons of provisions
and 50 tons of supplies.
The boat has forward and aft torpedo rooms, each with two 500mm tubes
for anti-ship torpedoes and four 200mm tubes for anti-torpedo torpedoes,
and a midships missile bay with MIRVed ballistic missiles (four megaton
warheads each) and anti-ballistic missiles. Eight point defense lasers
provide close-in defense.
The sub has quarters for 200 crew and passengers, and a life support
capacity of twice that. Usually there are around 100 core crew and 100
visiting scientists and family members (including the usual precocious
brat). Alternatively, the Multirole Submarine could embark marines or
commando troops.
A full load of ammunition and provisions is $58,550,000.

Design Notes
Body is 1,000,000 cf, with heavy compartmentalization and advanced
submarine lines. Structure is extra-heavy, expensive, and submersible.
Armor is expensive metal. Computerized controls with duplicate maneuver
controls and duplicate diving controls. 2,418 cf of empty space. Empty
weight is 50,000,000 lbs.

The vehicle uses the design rules from Vehicles [second edition, third
printing, Dec 2004 errata], VXi and VXii (the armor volume rule) with
the text format from Vehicles Lite. The design decisions assume that the
ladar detection rules from TS:Under Pressure are used.
Next Week: A lower-TL sub.
