I was thinking of actual spacecraft pilots - US astronaut pilots require 
20 months of training *after* they've established candidacy with a 
minimum of 1000 hours as pilot-in-command of jet air craft. When the 
book was written, the Mercury program recruited exclusively from 
military test pilots some of whom had thousands more hours.
