I played an online VOIP game for a while at the beginning of this
year. We tried using both Skype and Ventrillo. Unfortunately I have
only dial-up(28.8) and both of those programs proved so
unsatisfactory to me that I had to drop the game. The voice quality
over Skype got better and worse as other programs were trying to use
the Internet, too. We set up a voice channel with a lower quality on
a Ventrillo server, but Vent would eventually start to get behind,
some times as much as a minute. It's kind of frustrating to hear the
GM YELLING at you to take your turn, and then finally lose the turn
when you've got no idea that you've fallen behind again.
The congestion at times was so bad that Skype text chat and the
RPtools maptool text chat ALSO fell behind, something which I thought
would be impossible.
