As was mentioned, PBEMs are a lot of work, and require lots of patience
from everyone as the plot progresses very slowly..
For online gaming instead of GMing PBEMs, I nowadays prefer voice over
internet (TeamSpeak is a decent and stable freeware solution) with
a combination of other resources like an IRC channel with a dicebot,
'maptool' software for real-time scenario maps when needed, an FTP
server for giving players access to all the necessary files, Hamachi
VPN software for building a secure 'LAN' of sorts over the internet
(this can be helpful and offers alternate chat method and more direct
filesharing capability), googlemail file attachments for situations
where FTP or Hamachi do not work and I use Excel spreadsheets for
doing any otherwise excessive math faster (logistics, vehicles etc)
and keeping things more organized.
Practically all of the necessary software mentioned above is available
as freeware on the net. I could dig up some links to the stuff if anyone
is interested?
