To add to this...

1. Use pictures if possible. I've run PBEMs for over ten years and I 
have a file with pictures I've collected on the net so I can say, "This 
is what you see, with this change..." It might mean I change an 
encounter slightly to better match the picture, but in the end it saves 
time.

2. I tend to do skill rolls infrequently; if it's something that's 
non-stressful and that they should be able to do, I let it slide. If 
it's stressful, like repairing the shields as the bad guys close in, 
then a roll will be required.

3. I use dialog...a lot. If the PCs can talk their way through 
something, then I don't bother rolling.
