I tried PBEMs a few years ago, but it was far too slow for me. It was also felt more like a group effort in writing a novel than a RPG.

Although a little slow compared to table games, I've found chat-based gaming to work well. I've retained my Pyramid subscription for several years just to use the chat (actually a MOO, with dice rolling programs among other things) for online gaming.
