There was also an unbreakable, claw-shaped shield glove thing, which
doubled as a scabbard for the sword when it was small.

IIRC, the Thundercats were a regular bunch of superheroes - each had
their own special super-human skill /plus/ a magical weapon of their
own. They were the sort of people you would put in your escape pods
when your planet is about to blow up, which is exactly what happened
in the cartoon :).
