Smith & Wesson claimed that it was mechanically impossible to fire
eight shots from their Model 627 revolver in a second. Jerry Miculek
fired 8 rounds into one target in an even second. That is, IMO,
about the best you're going to get with any weapon that offers one
shot per pull of the trigger. Semiautomatic rifles, handguns, and
shotguns, will be slightly less than this as from a mechanical
perspective, they're slower to reset due to the slide or bolt reciprocating.
There are always exceptions, and IMO, they should be handled on a
case by case basis and backed by real world evidence. For instance,
the Beretta M1S90 might break the numbers I mention above. In any
case, the shooter who does this will be in the top 1% of the top 1%
of people who compete at this level.
