Hmm, my thoughts:
1. If based on a truly Amazonian culture, then warrior prowess will be prized. Survivors of the most recent battle will be granted the most desirable men for reproductive purposes, and incentives to have many children (particularly females) will be available. I suspect a regimented social heirarchy as a result.
2. This is in contrast to the possible more peaceful matriarchy, where reproductive prowess is still valued, but warrior prowess may not be. Attributes of intelligence, etcetera will also be cultivated. Beauty, ironically, may not be. In my experience, women in general tend to be more "intense" with respect to the attributes of their children, but that may be a biased opinion. Men may be more competitive with respect to limited engagements on the playing field with respect to their kids, but women are tops for social competition, education, etcetera. Just IMHO.
3. Also along the lines of a more "peaceful" matriarchy, keep in mind the way teenage boys fight and the way teenage girls fight. Boys join fisticuffs easily. Girls are more apt to resort initially to social embarassment/ostracism. Politics in a matriarchy, believe it or not, might be huge, peaceful or not. In fact, if we eliminate the Amazonian mythos of particularly athletically gifted females, you'd likely see a matriarchy that survived on subterfuge and a massive spy system. Seduction would be a good way to get what they wanted from foreign governments, and not a bad way to steal genetics from the most accomplished foreign talent.
"Agent X, your target is Bad Country Top Scientist Super IQ man-- go steal some genes, girl!"
You can take it from there. Just a different track for you, Hal.
