I used to go deep sea fishing on a buddies yacht that was built at the
height of Prohibition as a rum-runner on the Bermuda-New England run.  She
was a steel hulled beast that ran to 75' in length and had a reinforced hull
capable of going through a couple inches of ice.  On a decent day she could
easily make 35 knots, after the engines were overhauled and tuned, she could
go faster.  

I have no problems with a larger boat going 30 knots in the 20's, it was
well within the technological prowess of the region.  Remember all those old
four stacker DDs we Lend-Leased to the UK at the start of WW2?  They were
30+ knot ships...
